First, an overdue announcement: Diary of a Goldfish is hosting Blogging Against Disablism Day on 1 May 2009.
If you want to participate, go and check out the post – and write a post for 1 May 2009. Make sure you post the URL of your post here.
You can also post there now and let everyone know you’re going to participate. You can decide at the last minute, but as Lauredhel says, why not make the commitment?
That brings me to the other thing I wanted to say.
I made a resolution recently that I would post more about groups which I’m not part of, on the basis that it is necessary and a good thing to hear as many voices as possible speaking about certain issues. This makes groups more visible where they may otherwise be marginalised.
Anna’s post didn’t bring me to this decision – I’ve been thinking for ages that it’s something I should do, and I’d pretty much made the decision by the time I saw that post – but she hit the nail on the head (for me at least) with this:
people are often afraid of getting it wrong
Yep, that’s me!
But I’m trying to get over that fear. Yes, I will get it wrong sometimes. Hopefully I will get more right than wrong; hopefully I’ll be able to listen to people when they tell me I’ve got it wrong (and/or that I’ll eventually figure it out for myself) – and in any case, hopefully by adding my voice, I will help to normalise some necessary discussions.
The two areas I’m particularly interested in blogging more about are: topics relating to issues relevant to Indigenous Australians; and disability and accessibility.
This is one of the reasons I haven’t been blogging much lately. It’s often harder for me to write posts in support of groups to which I don’t belong because I want to do my very best not to get it wrong. (The other reason is that I’ve just been busy with work!)
But I do have a couple of posts in the pipeline, and I will be posting on 1 May for Blogging Against Disablism Day. My post will be about accessibility and choice.
I encourage you to do the same.
Cool – I’m looking forward to your post.
Thanks :)
Very late to this – just wanted to say good on ya! I’m also looking forward to your post. Having allies around willing to do things like this makes me feel that much happier. :)
Thanks :) But you’re not late – “late” would be, like, June ;)
