Without the full context of the quote, I'm not quite so damning as you (eg it may have been something like: "Q: Will you consult religious schools about the curriculum? A: "Yes, we will consult religious schools, just as there will be extensive consultation with all stakeholders.").

And I don't see Gillard as being worse than any other pollie.

But I wholeheartedly agree with the idea that it is atrocious that the quote suggests that religious schools are somehow a particularly special stakeholder with respect to the curriculum on sex ed.

"Federal Education Minister Julia Gillard promised yesterday there would be extensive consultation with all stakeholders, including religious schools, before the curriculum came into effect."

Hoh what sorry state of affairs that is...There are so many reasons to dislike Gillard, now I can add this one to the list.

@Jo Tamar

Ah, apart from PTSD/Borderline issues now and then day to day coping doesn't revolve around panic attacks these days, so I am all good without a trigger warning but thank you for your support and for putting one up there for all the others who might not be feeling as brave.

It really irks me as a journalism student too for that very reason. Not only that but then you know, men might actually have to start taking responsibility for their OWN actions and then, well, how could they blame it on us whorey-stupid-good-for-nothin'-ladehz ( / sarcasm ). Seriously though, the inability for men to take responsibility for rape just fucking pisses me off more than anything.

P.S adding you to my blog roll, hope you don't mind.

Just because I clearly haven't commented enough on this thread - this comment reminded me that we regularly referred to our gestating offspring as "the parasite" which extracted a few good reactions, but most people just giggled.

That's a great response. I hope that you continue to call your baby your little alien after sie is born :)

If my friend's experience is anything to go by, you'll still get the pink/blue stuff. Maybe not in size 000, but the colour-coded gifts will, I'm sure, begin to happen soon after the birth. With a couple of people, it was almost like they'd been just WAITING to find out the baby's assigned gender, so they could go shopping for the appropriate colour IMMEDIATELY.

(By the way, I really hope that those weird movements are not taking place in your stomach!!! ;) Cos that would be a rather weird pregnancy. Then again: have you read the book "Air"?)

I'm pregnant with my first and am responding to the "do you know what you're having?" with "apparently a baby, but I have my suspicions it's an alien..." my partner and I love looking at the bewildered looks on people's faces. Often if they seem particularly puzzled I continue by pointing out that really, if they'd looked at ultrasounds or felt the weird movements currently taking place in my stomach they'd wonder too.

While we do get particular enjoyment out of how inappropriate people seem to find this (apparently you can only have soft fuzzy feelings about pregnancy/babies and must not draw any links between this kind of gestation and more sinister ones) it is also our way of not playing into the whole gender game. We aren't finding out gender because it's not important to us, and seems like a nice surprise. It doesn't change what colour we will paint rooms, or what clothes and toys we will buy... and we'd love to avoid being (however generously) gifted in the blue/pink variety.
